The Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building (W18)

 

The Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building is the new home for MIT Music. Fully opened in February 2025, the building provides a centralized facility for music instruction and performance, with top-quality rehearsal spaces, recording studios, and new labs for music technology. The 35,000-square-foot building consists of three interconnected and distinct volumes: the Thomas Tull Concert Hall, the Erderly Music and Culture Space, and the Lim Music Maker Pavilion. The building was designed by the Japanese architecture firm SANAA, in close collaboration with Nagata Acoustics.

Building W18 Facilities

Constructed from three distinct volumes connected be a central lobby, the Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building offers opportunities for Musical exploration in performance, technology, recording, and more.

W18-1101 – Thomas Tull Concert Hall

Capacity: 390

Thomas Tull Concert Hall is a 327-seat concert hall in the round used primarily for MIT Music & Theater Arts classes, rehearsals, and performances. Although MIT MTA activities have priority, Tull Concert Hall rentals are available on a limited basis for events produced by other MIT DLCs (Department/Lab/Center) and approved external organizations.

Please note that Tull Concert Hall is not available for rental by student clubs or individual students.

W18-1108 Performance Lounge

Capacity:

The Performance Lounge is the green room space for musicians performing in Thomas Tull Concert Hall. Features two dressings rooms and a common area with an upright piano, mini fridge, microwave, hot/cold water dispenser, and programmable lockers.

Home to MIT’s Senegalese Drum Ensemble and Balinese Gamelan Ensemble, the Beatrice and Stephen Erdely Music & Culture Space offers the building’s most robust acoustic insulation. In addition to rehearsals by Music performance ensembles, the room is used for special workshops, presentations, and conference sessions.

The Erdely Music & Culture Space is currently available for MTA-related activities only.

  • Available for individual or small group practice and available on a first come, first served basis to all members of Music performance ensembles. Equipped with an upright piano.
  • Can be used as an isolation booth for recordings.

  • Available for use by MTA faculty and students enrolled in specific Music performance ensembles rehearsing amplified music. Equipped with a grand piano, drum set, digital piano, and amplifiers for guitar, bass, and keyboard.
  • Used as the main recording studio space.

W18-4309 – Small Rehearsal Room

  • Available for use by MTA faculty, Emerson/Harris pianists, and student group leaders in MIT Chamber Music Society. Equipped with a Steinway Spirio B grand piano.

W18-4311 – Large Rehearsal Room

  • Available for use by MTA faculty, Emerson/Harris pianists, student group leaders in MIT Chamber Music Society, and ASA music groups during designated hours. Equipped with one grand piano.

The Analog Devices Lobby (W18-1000LA) connects the three volumes of the Edward and Joyce Linde Music Building and is accessible to the public from 6am-7pm, Monday-Friday. MIT ID holders may access the lobby at all other times.

Although MIT MTA activities have priority, Analog Devices Lobby rentals are available on a limited basis for events produced by other MIT DLCs (Department/Lab/Center) and approved external organizations.

Building 4 Music Classrooms

MTA academic classes and ensembles, curricular rehearsals and requests from MTA faculty and staff have priority to use the five MTA managed Registrar classrooms in building 4. Emerson/Harris Piano students and MIT Chamber Music Society group leaders are granted access to these rooms.

Access is granted to ASA groups from 8pm to 12am Monday through Friday and from 7am to 12am on Saturday and Sunday. The Mazevo reservation system for ASA students opens after the second week of each semester to ensure class reservations, CMS, and Emerson/Harris times are reserved. Card access and Mazevo booking privileges will be given to the executive email list for each ASA group using the space.

Classroom Use Policy:

  • Users must have card access and an approved reservation requested through Mazevo. If you aren’t sure if you have Mazevo access, please email musicevents@mit.edu.
  • Users must restore the initial furniture set-up when leaving the room. A photo of each setup is found in the classroom, next to the door. Failure to do this may result in immediate suspension of classroom use privileges.
  • No Drinks or Food allowed in the classrooms.
  • Classrooms are to remain locked and with windows shut.  Do not prop the door open.  
  • Noise prohibitions: Amplified instruments and rock band rehearsals.
  • Never move or unplug the pianos.
  • Please cancel your reservation in Mazevo if you no longer plan to use it.
  • There is no access to classrooms during the summer.

There are 8 practice rooms located in Building 4 (4-260), each of which is equipped with a piano.

-Who is eligible to use practice rooms?

  • Students in MTA classes or ensembles are granted unrestricted (24/7) access.
  • Anyone with an active MIT ID automatically has access from 7 AM to 11 AM 7 days a week.
  • Students auditioning for MTA performance ensembles are granted access from 7 AM to 11 PM through the end of the audition period each semester.

-How do students reserve a MTA Practice Room?

  • Practice rooms are available on a first come, first served basis.  Practice rooms may not be reserved unless they are being used specifically for classes.  If a specific room is reserved for a class/lesson, the booking will be displayed on the iPad mounted on the wall in 4-260.  Faculty may reach out directly to the Events Office (musicevents@mit.edu) to book practice room space.

Elizabeth Parks Killian Hall (14W-111)

Elizabeth Parks Killian Hall (14W-111) is a 140-seat recital hall used primarily for MIT Music & Theater Arts classes, rehearsals, and performances. Although MIT MTA activities have priority, Killian Hall rentals are available on a limited basis for the following:

  1. Events produced by other MIT DLCs (Department/Lab/Center)
  2. Events produced by external organizations with an MIT co-sponsor (must be a current MIT faculty or staff member who will be present for the duration of the reservation)

Please note that Killian Hall is not available for rental by student clubs or individual students.
